ShalomVeg.com was created in November, 2007 as a networking and learning resource for Jewish vegans, vegetarians and animal activists.  With hundreds of articles and essays, recipes, and tools to connect to and communicate with people from around the world, ShalomVeg hopes to be the online meeting place for our growing community.

In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in examining the connections between our eating habits, our health, ethics, the environment and social justice--and the Jewish world has been no exception.  Judaism has a long history of discussing these issues, and even the question of vegetarianism has been part of Jewish thought for centuries; from the first Biblical description of a vegan diet in Genesis, to the current questions of human rights, "ethical kashrut" and caring for the environment.  Yet even with this proud past, understanding the issues and fighting for change has become more important then ever.

There have been books, documentary movies, blogs and conferences relating to these important connections, along with the few organizations devoted to the issues. However, there was a definite need for a place to bring the entire Jewish vegan and vegetarian community together, a place where visitors could learn, interact, and become active all in one convenient location.  So Shalomveg.com was born.

 

ShalomVeg is a free non-denominational community, with members from across the Jewish spectrum.  Articles and ideas are submitted by members, and the site can grow and change along with the community.  For more info about the features of the site, click here .

 

In today's world, vegetarianism is a path that can help heal the world, bring us closer together as a community, and build more connections with all life on earth. As Albert Einstein once said:

"Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature."
